What is The Compass Network?
The Compass Network is a new community designed to discover and showcase the significant untapped talent out there, toiling in the shadows. Filmmakers who don't have the money for huge promotional campaigns. Screenwriters without any big-name producers or network connections and just want to tell stories. Young artists who dream big by thinking small.
Working from this modest message board, Compass hopes to help these creators build an network among one another, and eventually an audience. Eventually, that will include becoming a destination for entertainment. Long-term we want to become part of your daily routine, with new content and discussions every day making Compass a fun and exciting place to spend an hour or two every afternoon.
Who is Compass for, and what will they get out of it?
Compass is for creators in the online era. Screenwriters trying to break out, filmmakers working on zero-budget projects, webcomic creators getting their work out there. Independent-minded, passionate creatives with a story to tell and no platform to tell it from, looking to engage with a community of smart, fun creatives.
We're also a place where a savvy, modern audience in the online era can hang out. The Netflix, DeviantArt, Kickstarter generation, looking for imaginative and exciting new things to watch, read, explore. Appreciators of indie projects and unique voices. And people who love to kick around a community and chat about everything from writing to sports to TV with likeminded folks.
What kind of projects does Compass feature?
Though we're stepping back from being a content network, Compass will still showcase exciting projects from its community wherever appropriate. This includes script series, podcasts, feature screenplays, webcomics, short films... The sky is the limit! While we consider ourselves more of an incubator and talent network, our longterm plans include branching back out into content down the line, and potentially even commissioning it.
Who's in charge of what?
The community is headed by RJ Alden Lackie, ably assisted by a group of fantastically talented Network Consultants: Steph Ouaknine, associate producer of Toronto's famed digital studio Smokebomb Entertainment; Tony Black, longtime administrator and script series showrunner at MZPtv & founder of spinoff site BZN; and Toronto-based comedy screenwriter Megan MacKay.
What's a Script Series?
A script series is similar to a television show, only unfilmed. Utilising the structure of a television series, both in the scripts themselves and in the process of writing them, script series are one-hour or half-hour scripts released every week in seasons of (typically) 6, 13, or 22 episodes. Alternately, we also have script series in the webseries format, which follow a similar pattern but with shorter scripts.
What's a Podcast
A podcast is an ongoing episodic audio project, usually nonfiction. Our podcasts follow a pretty typical panel format, with a handful of correspondents sounding off on different issues and news each week based on a central topic, i.e. films or sports.
