The Blacklist offers a service allowing unknown writers access to industry readers via a script database, with the opportunity to buy rated reads from industry readers (out of 10) in order to set yourself apart from the pack. $25/month to have a script on the side and $50/read. If you have a high average - 8 or above - you get a showcase in one of their industry-facing emails. THE BLACKLISTWaste of money or valuable service? The debate still rages, but I've decided that it's worth the shot. I've hosted two scripts there: TIMELESS, which you guys will recognise from Compass, and AFTER THE FIGHT, an indie drama I'm trying to get made here in Toronto. My experiences have been mixed, but I'll be singing a very different song if I can get some eyes on my scripts. Between the two of them, I've already had 13 pro views and 5 pro downloads, which is more than I've gotten through any other avenue aside from the even costlier trip to the Banff World Media Festival. For reference: TIMELESS has gotten 7-7-5 from industry readers and an 8 from an industry pro, giving me a solid-but-not-great score of 6.8. (If not for that wild-card 5 I'd be sitting happily on a 7.5 right now. But I've got a couple more ratings coming in that, barring more complications, should even things out a little.) Thoughts? Experiences?

Wasn't Kelly Marcel's script for Saving Mr Banks found on the Black List? Look how well that one did!

Yeah! Travis Beachum of Pacific Rim was also discovered on a Black List* (for his unproducible but widely-loved Murder on Carnival Row spec). Franklin Leonard, the runner of the site, is a tireless advocate of emerging writers, and he genuinely aims to change the game for folks like us. I love it, even if sometimes I wonder if I'm ready to be using it.
* The Black List database comes out of a yearly list of the best unproduced scripts voted on by industry members.

I'd never heard of this before but it sounds pretty cool. I certainly don't have the talent to throw that kinda money into it but maybe some day. Seems to be a better option than going the contest route.

I've known about The Blacklist a long time now, but I don't have the content to put up there, but I reckon I'll give it a shot when I have something worth putting up.

It's been awesome seeing the list come in today. Very inspiring. I hope one day to see you on it Alden. Likewise, Mr. Black! As it's a global site, remember the database is open to anyone globally, and the database is almost definitely a hop skip and jump from the official Year's Best list! Myself, I'm gunning to land on it in the next five years. Just y'all wait and see!

I've put my more recent feature, More, on the site. This time I've been more cautious, starting with one review, since last time I ordered three off the bat and watched as reviews #2 and #3 torpedoed my rating.
We'll see how this goes.
