I've heard from multiple sources that the iPhone 4+ have excellent cameras, definitely worthwhile filming on even for features. So I've been eying my 4S and seriously getting a tripod and a Belkin shotgun mic for it, so I can play around with filming and see if I can get comfortable with it. That would really drive down the price of production, maybe giving me and a team a decent basis for producing a super-indie film. Anyone else have experience with indie filming and working with their any equipment? Any war stories to share? I'll try to update here if I move forward with any of my own crazy plans.

I think that something like the 4s could work, as long as a few other things are taken into consideration. Firstly, if you're going to shoot with an iPhone, you have to try and control your lighting whenever possible. And you'll need to learn lighting because otherwise it will look really bad. Second, you will really need to invest in a good sound solution. The first thing that will tell audiences you shot on a phone is when they hear the audio. It needs to be really good audio. Third, because of the nature of the sensor in the camera, it can tend to get really ugly when using it handheld. So you're pretty much mostly restricted to static shots.
Here's an example of what can be done with an iPhone.
Personally, I'm a sucker for gear, so I'm looking at saving up for some stuff. Looking to buy a new camera, decent lighting and sound gear (always borrowed in the past, but I fear I've used up those favours). Ever since I got interested in movies, and subsequently TV, I've always been really interested in the production side of things. I'm genuinely hoping that I will be able to produce and independently release a show and/or films that I develop. Gotta get shooting! haha

I got my hands on an iPhone-friendly shotgun mic - a little thing, but I' looking forward to testing it! And I'll be picking up a tripod I can use for the iPhone soon too. I'm hoping this summer, a buddy or two will help me try them out and explore my more directorial/production-y side.

My tripod has arrived! Perhaps I'll shoot a little test footage while I'm on vacation next month...

For podcasting, Stephane and I both now use the Snowball ICE, and its audio quality has been pretty good. We'll see what people think when we finally release something, though!
