I'm a big fan of zombie stuff, so this sounds right up my street. Are you going for the Romero feel, or more of a frenetic 28 Days Later approach?

Romero. Slow Zombies. I've always been attracted to the "living characters first" approach to Zombie story telling.

So the more I think about it the less likely it is that I'll be releasing HTML versions of the scripts. They just don't look very nice and I want this show to look as good as possible.
Anyone out there who's a huge fan of the html versions or just a very ant .pdf person? I'm still willing to go the extra mile if there's a demand for it.

I don't know many that view via .html if I'm honest. If fact I know none but I'm sure there are users out there.

I never caught this the first time around. Maybe the Compass launch is a good time for me to start, now that I'm not 2 seasons behind!

I tend to prefer HTML, solely because I'm not conscious of the page count using it If I get halfway through, and know I'm halfway through, I sometimes get easily distracted. ETA - That said, I'm fine with PDF if it's what you want.

Episode One is now live! Went ahead and added an HTML version. It's not as fancy as I used to do with the graphics and the table of contents. Just a straight final draft "save as .html" job but it's readable.

Caydem Falls 1x01 - Outbreak
I really enjoyed this. Unlike The Walking Dead's opening focus just on Rick that slowly expanded to his eventual crew, here we jump in on an ensemble, all with disparate POVs and plots of their own. As a show walking the line between family drama and zombie movie, it does it well, pacing out interestingly in the first hours of a zombie-based evacuation. So far, the characters that leave most impression are Karl, the mischievous college student with a predilection for harebrained schemes; Curtis, the typical 'I know what's best' patriarch with no patience for his youngest son's alternate theories; youthful Justin, rebellious, smart and in love, and Mark, clearly a good man whose reactions particularly work well in the face of real horror.
The flaws, then? Well, the script did one thing that really bugged me: including last names in character dialogue headings, a big no-no. In general, Dex's writing isn't as sharp as it could be, and sometimes that hurts (well-chosen act breaks, for example, tend to not hit with the right force thanks to the writing)... but it kind of works to the show's favour as the characters feel more normal, helping ground us in the mundane 'day in the life' they were having up until the crisis hit. Occasionally there's a formatting issue that makes me wince, like the extra-long parenthetical on page one, but generally it flows well.
The zombie moments so far, with Aaron, the Business zombie, and the retirement home were all pretty strong, with the standout Mark's traumatising first zombie encounter on the road. As the characters are written, it really felt like a regular guy suddenly being faced with something so bizarre, unreal and violent that he couldn't even understand it.
As long as I can find time, I expect to be back week to week, as this was worth the read!

As a show walking the line between family drama and zombie movie, it does it well, pacing out interestingly in the first hours of a zombie-based evacuation. That was one of my goals from the beginning. I don't want the show to be about any one person because in those situations the audience sort of already knows the top guy or gal isn't going to die. In Caydem Falls anyone can go at anytime and there's always plenty of (hopefully well developed) characters left to work with. The flaws, then? Well, the script did one thing that really bugged me: including last names in character dialogue headings, a big no-no . I've never understood this rule. For me, personally, I think the page looks better with the full name there but I do realize I'm in the minority on this one. I managed to keep myself from doing it on my latest script and there's a chance I'll go back and take them out of the upcoming Caydem episodes. My goal with it here was to subtly highlight the families in the script. The Walkers and the Andersons are the only ones I do it for. Glad you enjoyed the show. The review is much appreciated.
